My encouragement to you is to consider the what ifs in a positive light. To surround yourself with people that believe in you and want the best for you. How are you collaborating with those around you? Who do you see that has great ideas? Reach out, ask for a moment of their time, be encouraged and go for it.
Just for a moment, let's consider the worst case scenario, so you see someone or know of someone or have heard of someone doing something in your space that is way cool. You think, it would be great if I had what they had. They are where I would like to be in 2-5 years. But you can't reach out to them, because of fear. What if they reject me, what if I don't get through, What if they say no to me? My response is... and move on to the next person. Was it really that bad? Now you know and you have learnt about taking steps and taking action and really the fear before you do it, is worse than the actual call. I say call because I encourage you to do this over the phone or face to face where you can. Email is OK, but lacks the challenge of beating back your fear. The more you take these steps the less fearful you become.
Areas to consider
- Collaborate - you get more out of it, come with what you bring to add to the conversation
- Participate - share what you know and focus on what others may get out of it
- Be selfless - the time for keeping your secrets is past, the time for sharing is now
- Care - Genuinely care about the other person, focus on them. Often the by-product is what you get out of it
- Social Entrepreneurship - There is a better way, it's up to us to be creative and find it
The next day I received a call, I didn't recognise the number, but as is my habit I answered it anyway, it was Justin returning my call. I thanked him for returning my call, I mentioned how I had followed his business with keen interest, mentioned something specific that I liked and asked him for a moment of his time to pick his brain. Now before I had made the call on the previous day, I had a clear agenda. The problem I was facing today that I didn't have a direct answer for and the way I was going to ask the question to the person who I believed had faced the same issues, had overcome and come out on top. Someone who had actually done it before. This is key to reaching out in collaboration, you are not the only person to face these issues, someone has faced them before and come out on top. If you see people who are where you want to be in time, they can help you. Yes they can and they may, you never know until you ask. So as for my conversation with Justin, I found he was open to my call, was helpful (more than I expected) and was able to give me clear ideas about what steps to take next. What I did with this was thank him for his time ask him if he would be open to me calling again on rare occasion and hopefully I could return the favour in some way in the future. What I then did was made sure I liked his Facebook page and made sure to promote him in any social way I could. I didn't tell him I was doing that, I just did. And I took all the action steps he suggested. Now, what did Justin get from this interaction? I'm not sure, I hope he got something from it, but my potential competition was not flustered or agitated by me, but genuinely helped me.
My question to you is, "What's the worst that could happen?"
